The registry office of the City of Villach is responsible for the certification of all births that occur in the Villach municipality. In the case of a birth in wedlock, the child’s mother or father or, in the case of a birth out of wedlock, the child’s mother may apply for the issuance of a birth certificate.
The following documents are required for the certification of a newborn::
Children born in wedlock
- Marriage certificate of the parents from the registry office
- Birth certificates of the parents
- Certificate of citizenship of the parents (passport in the case of foreign nationality)
- Any proof of degrees and official titles (e.g. Ing.)
- Valid photo identification
Children born out of wedlock
- Birth certificate of the mother
- If the mother has been married before: Marriage certificate of the previous marriage as well as divorce decree or resolution with confirmation of the legal validity or death certificate of the spouse
- Certificate of citizenship of the mother (passport in the case of foreign nationality)
- Any proof of degrees and official titles (e.g. Ing.)
- Valid photo identification
In cases of home births, the report of birth confirmed by the doctor or midwife is also required.
Acknowledgement of paternity
If the father is entered on the birth certificate for a birth out of wedlock, he must go to the registry office together with the mother of the child and sign an acknowledgement of paternity.
Fee
Birth certificates for newborn children are
free of charge.
Certificate of registration
Registration with the registration authorities is completed during the certification of the birth at the registry office at request. In this case, no additional documents are required, even if the main residence is in another municipality.

Information on the name of the child
- Surname: Children born in wedlock with Austrian citizenship receive the same surname as the parents.
- First name: The parents make a mutual decision on the first name of the child for children born in wedlock, and the mother decides on the first name of the child for children born out of wedlock. The first name of the child must be appropriate for the gender of the child. The number of first names is not restricted. Names that are not conventional first names or are detrimental to the well-being of the child may not be registered.
