A registration procedure is necessary when someone relocates to or within Austria. In the event of emigration abroad from Austria, de-registration is required.
Registration and de-registration is mandatory.
Deadlines
Registration: within 3 days of moving into accommodation (registration of a newborn: within 3 days of leaving the maternity ward)
De-registration: 3 days before or within 3 days of departure
Name, marital status, gender or nationality changes made within the domestic territory are entered in the register directly by the registry office or citizenship office, with the result that separate notification is not necessary. In cases of name, marital status, gender or nationality changes made abroad, the change must be reported within a month.
Where and how do I register, re-register or de-register?
You can register, re-register or degister at the
registration office, ground floor, Town Hall, Rathausplatz 1.
Opening times:
- Monday: 8 am to 12 p.m. (afternoons by appointment)
- Tuesday: 8 a.m. to 12 pm, 1p.m. to 7 p.m.
- Wednesday: 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. (afternoons by appointment)
- Thursday: 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., 1 p.m. to 4 p.m
- Friday: 8 a.m. to 12 p.m
Registration, re-registration or de-registration can be completed by the person subject to registration itself or by third parties (messengers) with the
original documents of the person subject to registration or certified copies of these documents by post or
in person at our office. Online registration is currently not permitted by law. A confirmation of this is issued once registration has been implemented.
In principle, registration must be completed at the registration office locally responsible for the accommodation. If a
main residence is registered, the de-registration of the previous main residence must be completed at the same time. The de-registration of
secondary residences can be completed where a connection to a residence exists (main residence or secondary residence).
Violations of the obligation to register are administrative offences. The Registration Act stipulates fines for such violations.
